From what I understand, the authorities established that he was not in their custody and they were merely escorts. Therefore, they had no right to regulate his activity.
In reality, they were trying to make him comfortable and loosen him up and get him to talk. And since he isn't in custody and isn't being questioned....any confessions are admissable in court.
