I had one of the early '97 2.5 cars, and I loved it...it was like a modern 914-6. Never had a problem with it, and I sold it to a co-worker who likewise never experienced any problems. Evidently some of the '98-99 models were the ones with the RMS and crankcase porosity issues.
Later on, I bought a '00 996, which I absolutely hated, as it was like driving a sporty Lexus. Zero Porsche "feel" in that one. The Boxster was WAY more fun, and actually drove like a proper Porsche. I liked the peaky, sonorous 2.5 engine a lot...reminded me of a 2.2 or 2.4 911.
