Britt, make sure the little flappers on the bottom of the impeller housing are working properly. If they don't open, you don't get heat. They are soft aluminum and easy to deform.
If you want heat from the stock HE's you've got to keep the engine wound up. If you keep it spooled up above 3500 rpm you should get plenty of heat.
