I have decided to put this off for a few months. The area at the bottom of each cover does have oil/dirt around them, but it does not seem very fresh. I have to replace my cat in a few months anyway and I believe I will have more room to get at them. I am also tired of the current project. It has gone on too long and I want my car back. If it looked bad enough or if I had noticed a huge puddle on the ground under them, I would o it now.... I will refer back to this thread, thanks for all the help and ideas!
