You can re initialise the ipod by downloading and running the ipod software updating program - I did this today and it gave 2 options..
1 - completely clear the ipod of music and files and load the software
2 - just update the software leaving the music and photos etc untouched.
I moved from version 1.1.1 to version 1.1.2 of the ipod software and it worked fine.
I use AVG free edition for virus checking.
