Hi Shawn, I had a ticking coming from one exhaust valve. I located it with a steel bar (to the ear), then pulled that cover to examine the rockers and guides. Turned out the valve guide is pretty worn (can wiggle the valve stem back and forth.

Once you have isolated the source of the noise then it doesn't hurt to have a look. The valve cover comes off in minutes.
