I saw Satriani and Johnson a couple of months ago in Tampa from the 7th row. I started nodding out during Johnson's set. He plays around with his gear WAY too much for my taste. When ever he would go for a distorted sound, he would kick on a plexi and the volume change from close up was kind of irritating because he wouldn't just do it for solos.....he would do it 3 or 4 times minimum during the course of a tune. Satriani, on the other hand, rocked. I'm an old school amp kinda guy.....i currently own a 66 Vibrolux, custom handwired 50w Plexi, a 18w Marshall clone and a '57 tweed Twin reissue....not a high gain amp in the bunch...lol.....but I was amazed at how good that new Peavey signature amp of Joe's sounds. Much closer to the "brown" sound than Eddie ever got once he switched over to the 5150, IMHO.
