Now this may sound strange or even contradictory, but I haqve been disappointed with Clapton for a number of years. I listen to his early stuff and compare it with his more recent work, I feel that he thought that he didn't have to "show off'any more and went for something more "soulful". What we ended up with was something more "poppy" and "boring" What i am saying is don't just play to show off your technical prowess.......anybody ever seen Michael Angelo Batio, if that is his name......and his multi-neck guitars? BLECH!!!!! But show us what ya got in the context of some well written and moderately relevant music. John Mayer started to show us some of that on the first few cuts of his recent live CD. My comment at the Satch/EJ show was that Satch should get a new wardrobe and sign up to be a guitarslinger with some really rockin band that has a great songwriter. He is clearly one of the best in the bidness, but he needs a new canvas on which to paint...the old gig has gotten kind of tired. i honestly think that most guitar players, if they were honest with themselves, would have to admit that they view his shows as less of a musical performance and more of an instructional video from which they can pickup some technical tricks.
