In that price range, I'd suggest the following: Build yourself a little Bottlehead "Foreplay" preamp then mod the Hell out of it. As far as an amp, find a nice old Dyna Stereo 70, then mod again (many folks like Van Alstine) have retrofit boards to bring the circuitry into a more "modern mode"...Doing these 2 projects, you'll have enough $ left for a decent pair of speakers.
