We would have helped, probably secretly, any secular government in the Middle East resist the forces of Islamic radicalism. That includes Saddam's government, and the government of his sons if it came to that.
That last thing we needed after 9/11 was for another oil-producing state in the ME to fall to a radical Islamic theocracy.
Which is exactly what we have now.
