To fight Islamic radicalism. To prevent the enemy (violent Islamic radicals) from gaining Iraq's oil wealth, not to mention leverage over the United States and the world economy through its vast oil resources. To prevent Iraq from aligning with Iran and our other enemies in the ME.
In short, they should have helped Saddam fight Islamic radicals to prevent exactly what is happening in Iraq today.
