On Tavis Smiley last night, the guest, Dr. Helen Caldicott, is an anti-nuclear advocate. She wants to shut down nuclear plants everywhere in the world, with the thought that for what good they do (electricity, power, etc), they cause much more cancer and disease.
Anyway, her scenario on nuclear war is this: it takes 100 targeted at 100 major cities in the world, to destroy the world via a nuclear snow storm. In any event, Russia has 30,000 nuclear warheads, and we have that, if not more.
Furthermore...
The next time terrorists strike, she said, they need only target a nuclear power plant, not an office building, and blow that up. If this is done near Manhattan, resulting deaths will be in the millions.
Of course, Homeland Security hasn't increased security around any of the U.S. nuclear power plants since 9/11 - but that opens up a whole 'nother spate of conspiracy theories.
