David, your motor will easily go 8000 RPM. It'll do it quite often if you took out the limiter.
My dad's got a 2.8 w/twin plug, factory ST heads, balanced internals, stock rods, AASCO springs, RSR light flywheel and light pressure plate and his motor goes 8500 in a heartbeat...literally.
Big ports, good rotating assembly, stock rods, basic springs ... sounds pretty Porsche to me. 8500 isn't really a big deal, fellas.
FWIW, Porsche does an EXCEPTIONAL job balancing their motors right out of the factory. Any rod up to 3.0 will easily be strong enough to rotate at 8000+ .... it's 3.2 and up that suck in terms of RPM. Maybe the rod bolts are the weak link, but stock rod bolts are fine as long as they're within spec. Not to mention the fact that a 2.4, 2.7, or 2.8 piston is pretty light.
