The basic concept is also very similar to an Escher Wyss Straflo turbine. The inprovement seems to be in removing the shaft and bearing mass from the axis and incorporating them into the rim drive. Unlike the NASA unit, which relied upon magnetics for radial and axial stability, RR is using water-lubed bearings. Cool.
