You are right, you shouldn't have to. I've never personally worked on a car with this problem, but I know in braking systems, grease and other foreign substances generally cause brake systems to grab. I know there are differences between the systems but there are similarities as well....so what I offered was more of a guess than a "I've seen this before" thing. Anyway, I hope you find the problem.
