i picked up an 80k mile A4 Quattro for 6ish a few months ago.
great driver, but no performance. I got the 2.8
It's a great car, but maintenance is not cheap.
they have their share of problems too, fortunately all of that had been addressed on my car by the previous owner (tie rods, airbag, timing belt, etc)
i think the 1.8's had a sludge problem too.
I got lucky with mine. I bought it from a Porsche owner, who bought it for his nanny. He had every record on the car since new.
the day after i bought it, the idle adjuster went out, and the car kept stalling. It was a $400 bill, but the seller picked up the tab.
