My thoughts exactly. Sounds like you are hitting something like "ctrl-shift-home" which will select everything from where you are currently typing to the beginning, and then once it's all selected anything you type whether it be a space, a character or a sentence, will automatically replace what was selected. In most Windows programs, "ctrl-z" will get all of your old stuff back.
