Herman - I am a BMW tech by trade. I have never seen any issue with non-M engine vanos units failing or making noise. It just doesn't happen.
There are other common issues like those stated above. Add to that the intake seperator plate fails (engine PCV system) and leaks oil externaly and in severe cases cause the car to burn oil like there's no tomorrow.
The other deal is the valley pan (seals top of the engine block cooling passage) seal will fail and start to leak coolant.
The later cars '99 and up are better sorted out, better sound systems, and xenon lighting.
