When I got my car the timing belt had 2500 miles on it, I had it retensioned and went on my way. About 6000 miles later the bearings in one of the rollers disintegrated and ate the belt. Luckily I heard it and shut the engine off, the belt was hanging on to the busted roller and waterpump by about 1/8". VERY lucky. After that I had everything under the timing cover replaced. The previous owner didn't have that done obviously.
