The yankee states supported slavery more vigorously than any other area of the country during it's years existing. Suggest you read the history of it in
Complicity: How the North Promoted, Prolonged, and Profited from Slavery. Written by authors that write for the Hartford Courant, that's in Connecticutt by the way.
People who try to beat the Confederacy over the head about slavery almost always know very little about it and their own history.
