I've been there--thought I won, then find out the seller has a reserve of twice market price. 
Hard to criticize people for acting in their own best interest.

what angst? if you as a bidder meet the reserve, you will know about it, and if you don't meet it , you will also know about it
the auction will simply tell you "reserve not met"
which is a dead giveaway...
