Wife is from India.
Like most above, I find India both facinating and revolting at the same time. The pollution is horrible. I don't think I felt clean the entire time I was there. But I loved the complexity of Indian culture. At times, I enjoyed the mad rush of people and cars and scooters......and cows.
Don't be afraid to go and stay if a western hotel. We were staying with our wifes relatives, and we ended up going to the Grand Hyatt in New Delhi. Nothin' better than decent margarita to ease the mind.......
On the whole, I enjoyed India, and will go back. But I will stay in high end hotels when I go back.
