+1, definitely do it! I was going down the same path but I got lucky and found a really nicely built 944S so I sold the one I was going to build.

I'll second what others have said about maintenance. Having had both 911's and now the 944, I find the 944 to be pretty easy to work on. It's not as simple as the 911 is mechanically (aside form the engine), but it's not overly complicated either.
