"Long hood" is the original body style from the 60's up through 1973.
In 1974, due to new bumper regulations, the body was changed, and several inches were cut off the hood. These are known as short hoods, or impact bumper cars.
The long hoods are prized for being the lightweights of the 911 family, offering the most "pure" driving experience.
The 1974 and later cars started the trend towards heavier, more luxurious cars.
