A ten mile radius from Sky Harbor covers a lot of nice areas. When we moved here from Atlanta 7.5 years ago we looked at a dozen houses all over metro Phoenix. We ended up in an area called Ahwatukee. Look west of I-10 around Ray Rd. Having lived here and explored the city I'd still pick this part of town if I had to do it over again.
It takes us 20 minutes to get to the airport door to door. During rush hour it takes longer, but it's not terrible. Firebird Raceway is <10 minutes from our house.
There are a lot of houses for rent right now, so you should be in good shape.
