Fuel in the oil

Ok, I bought this 74 914 not running and got it started (with help from this great resource you all support). Since starting, I haven't run it more than a few minutes at a time but it seems to develop normal power and smoothness. I found a leak caused by a misplaced valve cover gasket. While getting lots of oil on the ground in this process I noticed the consistency was very thin and smelled like gas. Also, the dipstick is showing a level a couple inches above the normal high/low mark pair. I'm pretty sure I'm getting fuel in the crankcase. Any idea what would cause this? The engine is a 1.8 and I think has the original fuel injection setup.
