As long as they are solid and the bolts are long enough, I think the strength would not be reduced significantly in a potential impact.

I'm not so sure - in an impact you'd be surprised how much inertia a seat is subjected to. I'd be inclined to find somewhere that sells bars of aluminium and do the job right. Often times you can find scrap aluminium in scrap yards - old double-glazing window frames and similar are often a good source for such projects.
