Yup. It involves the timing belts etc so it can be done by a reasonably skilled DIY'er but requires some special tools, torque wrench etc. Because these are "interference" engines screwing up on the timing belt can, and usually does, lead to some very serious and expensive consequences. It may not be the head gasket but your symptoms match exactly the symptoms described in "Clarks garage" for a non-catastrophic head gasket failure. Best have a read of that.
