Nickel is magnetic.

The most difficult problem we had at GM in the late 60s while developing the permanent magnet DC motor was hysterisis loss from the opposing poles of stator and rotor. If the magnet was not resistant to field loss, the motor would not run for long as the permanent magnet ultimately lost its strength.
