Hey Mattcamp,

Although bad motor mounts would not help the issue; Clutch chatter is typically caused by hard spots on the pressure plate and/or flywheel surface. The hard spots are caused by excessive heat and sometimes by poor manufacturing. The hardened surface area wears slower than the softer surrounding areas. You end up with patches of high spots that cause the chatter as the friction material is pinched more tightly under them. This same thing happens to brake discs.

If there is enough material on the flywheel, it can be turned down (i.e. remove hard surface material). The key is to go deep enough to remove ALL of the hard spot and not just the high spot, or it will return prematurely as the surface wears. Sometimes the flywheel does not have enough material to do this. I fear some folks think you just need to remove the high spots and your done.

An experienced operator can tell just by the sound of the lathe as it's turning the material. Ever hang out a brake shop and hear them turning rotors? The sound will change as the lathe passes over the hard spot. When the sound is the same all the way around the surface, your good.

Hope this helps!
