I too have problems doing straight bar curls, even the contoured bars hurt my forearms, wrists and elbows. I try to stick with dumbells for as many exercises as possible. I think the full range of flex or turn helps you perform an exercise that works with YOUR body make up. It is less of a one size fits all approach.

On a different note, the best thing I ever did to get ride of my shoulder pain is to seperate it. Hurt like Hell for 4 months but my range of motion is now improved greatly (I'm not saying to deliberately go out and do it but...).

At 41, it is difficult to get back into shape due to past injuries. The best advice I can give anyone is STAY in shape. Muscle and Flexability is your friend, fat and excess weight add to the pain.
