A Plea for Internet Change/Courtesy.
Can we PUH-LEEEEEEEESE refrain from innundating our happy little house of insanity here on the Internet with hours upon hours of stupid YouTube videos? It's not that I don't appreciate the attempts at humor but the problem with videos (unlike static images or even short animations) is it's impossible to ascertain the content until you've watched the thing in its entirety. This leads to BIGTIME wastes of time and can potentially lead to embarassing situations because of content of said videos. To avoid the unpleasantness of wasting one's time, getting dirty looks from one's spouse, getting fired, or otherwise suffering the detrimental effects of being exposed to the content of these videos, I'm asking that the following guidelines be observed:
1. If you post a video, PLEASE put a short description of the content. I'm getting sick of threads (on this and other sites) that have titles like, "Check this out" and then a video. Might be auto racing, might be porn, might be a girl horseback riding, might be an archery tournament. No idea. Some can get people in trouble at home/work/whatever, some can't. Consider this a spin-off of the "truth-in-naming" suggestion that was made a few weeks ago. . .
2. If the video you ABSOLUTELY have to host has obnoxiously loud volume, please warn us before linking to it so we know to turn the volume down to a respectable level so we don't piss off co-workers or other people nearby that might not want to hear whatever it is. . .
3. Ditto on commercials and other content that might be construed as just generally annoying.
4. ABSOLUTELY ditto on anything that could get one in trouble. If it can get someone fired for watching it, do us a favor and put a "NWS" or "Not Work Safe" on it or somethin', k?
5. If possible, make your point using still images. Using the Internet for video transfer is like using a Yugo for a DE session. Yes, you can MAKE it work, but it really ain't the best tool for the job. Bandwidth issues are still a factor for a lot of us, sucking it all up on stupid videos doesn't really help to alleviate the expense or net-lag (on shared connections).
Thanks. Hope I don't get flamed too badly for this. I ain't trying to be a deekhead about it, but I'm getting so tired of having to sit through long, drawn-out video clips just to figure out what the hell a given post/thread is about when it could have just as easily been described in two or three short sentences.
Thanks, peace.
Was I supposed to post that in purple or red or somethin'? Can't keep all them colors straight.
