You are looking to get your first Porsche, right? Don't get it this way, trust me. You can do all your own work, but do you feel you can do it right.
Lots of guys will say it's not rocket science and it's not. But it is different and you will likely mess it up the first time. Mess up a running car a little than a non-running car a lot.
Buy the nicest, newest car you can afford. If I were to do it all over again, I would buy a cream puff SC and keep it around. Sure, it wouldn't be the newest, trendiest car but it will be solid for a long time if you take care of it.
That being said, my first 911 was a 3.2L Carrera (which I still have) and I am trying to sell an SC to get a 996. Do as I say, not as I do......
BTW, a good 3.0L is 4-5k. Paint is 2-20k. Some things just cost what they cost.
