There is really only two important rules of gun safety.
1) Never point a gun at any living thing unless you want to kill it(and this includes your neighbors on the other side of that party wall).
2) do not EVER put your finger on the trigger until you are ready to shoot- as in until the very moment you are ready to shoot.
I guess if you have kids or a stupid spouse/sibling/friends, there is a third rule: Make sure that if they can get to your guns they are fully versed in rules 1 and 2.
Do those two things, and you will never have any problems at all.
