Seems high under the circumstances? For an 84k mile car, $48k is high period. With a clean title, should go for high-$30s-low-$40s. Subtract ~20% for salvage title and you're in business.
Tough situation given it's a mechanic you "know and trust". My MIL had a very nice low miles, perfectly maintained car and her trusted mechanic tried to lowball her by several $k.
When it comes to buying and selling cars, even the nicest people can show an ugly face.
