A higher opening bid would reduce the number of prospective buyers. For the same reason, a disclosed reserve price would also reduce the pool of potential buyers. The more people bidding, the more bidding wars bringing the price up. Also, by having a non-disclosed reserve price, you can see how much people are wiling to pay for your item, without having to sell it if the reserve it not reached.
