Congrats to you - that's a ballsy thing to do confronting someone and sticking to your guns like that. It paid off for you. Shame it forced you into that situation, but I'm glad it paid off.
FWIW I'd still stop by the police station and have a chat with one of the officers on duty just to see if the guy might be guilty of hit-and-run anyway (since he DID leave the scene without leaving a note or contact information, albeit before you caught up with him). You might be able to stick it to this guy once for making his insurance pay for his screwup and again with an arrest warrant for hit-and-run. I say do it. It's clear that this guy would've weaseled out given even half the chance.
