My 911 was parked on a local street while my wife was in the gym; Someone trying to do a 3 point turn I assume put a nice dent in the rear quarter panel in front of the rear wheel. No note.
So, I called the police and reported a hit and run. Unfortunately they were unable to find the culprit and since the day it happened was also the day of the local car show (2 years ago) we had a lot of our of towners that day. The investigating officer did a pretty decent investigation though; checked the local auto shops for repairs related and monitored the street for a few days for a car with the right color paint and height of bumper. When we called them they responded but if they hadn't we simply would have walked over an made the report at the station. You always have that option if they can't repond to a non-injury accident.
You handled it well enough but I think that I would have called the police before he came out of the store to see if they wanted to catch him.
