How do you stop a nine year old dog from licking young children <3?

My dog has always licked but we have trained her to leave us alone. But the kids either can't or don't want to stop her and it drives my wife nuts. So much so that she locks the dog in another room for periods. The dog will whine and scratch at the door.

I am worried that she is teaching the dog to resent the children and that can lead to bad things.

I told her we need a better way to deal with this. So what's a better way?
