To get to the bottom line, if your wife will be happy buying Plummers type stuff, count yourself lucky and let her have at it.
You can't go too wrong with $700 dressers, etc. You'll get 15 years of use out of it, and in the end it won't cost much per year. And you'll get some pennies on the dollar back when you sell it, or, even easier, you'll donate it and take a nice tax deduction, reducing your per-year use cost even more. With a little searching, maybe you can even find that $700 dresser for $500, making it even better.
