switching out the head is usually the fastest way to go. Double check to see it will fit. Think about new head bolts. I don't like reusing them. If the old head isn't too bad, you could sell it as is or rebuit to re-coup some of the expen$e.

Sorry for the luck, It could happen to anyone. Taking your tale of woe to heart I will double check (hec, triple check) everything before turning the key when I do the job.
