Anytime you get millions of bucks into something, "creative displacement of reality" is going to take place. Pro Football, the Final Four and the Rose Bowl, the World Series, heck even the World Cup isn't completely run the way a true sport should be done - I'm not even certain you can find it in HS Football playoffs anymore.

Let us not loose sight of the obvious - it is entertainment nothing else. A show. A spectacle.
For the most part this is true. But don’t loose sight of the fact that for the participants (save wrestling or roller derby) they are either athletes / sportsmen, engineers, mechanics, business owners, etc. and, as a whole, very talented, dedicated and good - the best - and they work hard at what they do to stay there. It's the rules and organizers / "front office" that ultimately lead to these type discussions, and those people are also very good at what they do also. Track ownership and series ownership - that’s where the big money is.

I almost hate to say it - not so vague resemblence to government at every level.

A guy that knows told me, 35 years ago, if you want to make money in racing own a track - not a team.
