There's a guy on the MegaSquirt Success Story forum that's done something along these lines.
His project was to install a double overhead cam Ford 4.6 engine into a 1979 BMW 3-series. That's an e21, the predessor to the e30, though they look a lot alike, the suspension is different.
Power from this engine is from about 340-380 hp stock, and this gentleman is upgrading the fuel injection and ignition on the engine.
The car weighs about 2800 pounds with the stock 4 cylinder engine.
