Do kids even do push-ups in gym class anymore?
I don't know if he was a marine, but I had a gym teacher like that, and I graduated in 1996. He gave extra credit if you threw up in class (there had to be chunks). I took him for weight-lifting my entire junior and senior years. He had no problem standing in front of you while you were exercising and berating you for doing too little weight or for having bad form. He was one of my favorites.

My other favorite was my senior english teacher. He was a self-professed liberal and the department head. He had a very laisez-faire attitude in class. Thing was, he would let students know where the lines were and in no-uncertain terms that they were not to be crossed. Underneath his calm, cool exterior was a real hard-ass. I liked and respected him. Even the trouble makers never gave him a hard time.
