We have a tempurpedic and like it a lot. We tried the thinner overlay, and it didn't work well for us. Some of the criticisms of the tempurpedics that I've heard are that they take some "breaking in," if you like your bedroom cold (<65F) they are too hard, and initially they may give off an odor that is temporary but some don't like. We had none of these problems. The cheaper knock offs are not nearly as good.
Another option is the "comfort select" (not memory foam) but an air pump system, which my son has and loves.
Both are expensive, but a good night's sleep is priceless. I recommend looking at both, getting on them and seeing how they feel for you and yours.
