I think that as long as a group or individual thinks it will be rewarded for being a "victim" it will do nearly anything to maintain that status. I would use for an example the very uniform reaction by black leaders to the recent gay community's claim that their plight for "civil liberties" parallels that of the blacks in the 1960's.

I doubt that any of us has ever met a American slave, let alone been damaged by American slavery. Has anyone else ever wondered why cries for slave reparations never includes repatriation?

My point here is not to be inflammatory but that in the last quarter century affirmative action and similar programs have not well served whites or minority's. It has been the cause of bitterness and fostered a sense of entitlement.
