If I were wronged by a company to the tune of several thousand dollars, I'd hire a lawyer and sue them.
I'd sue them under a variety of theories, including under the state's various consumer protection statutes (I believe Cal has a Business and Professions Code and a Consumer Legal Remedies Act, both of which are very powerful in these kinds of situations).
As part of that, I'd do discovery against the company and find out all about all of their dealings with customers over the past 10 years. Everything. Empty the closet.
I'd to that instead of just spinning my wheels on the internets looking for the answer at a toll free 800#.
But that's just me.
