Firearm buyers are fickle. Most, even my redneck, hunting type friends, would not buy a firearm at Wal-Mart. However, people who are not firearm owners but that want to get a present for a friend or relative do buy at Wal-Mart due to price and convenience.
I would suspect that if a Wal-Mart stops selling, it is purely money motivated. They probably cannot use their monopsonistic power to get a dirt cheap price on the firearms - it's not like they can have kids in El Salvador make up a boat-load of Cathy Lee shotguns.
Plus there is there record keeping requirements of the ATF. Additional employee training, and additional resources to properly file and store the paperwork could make firearms a no-profit item for them.
