"As the president has made clear," Gates said, "we simply cannot afford to fail in the Middle East. Failure in Iraq at this juncture would be a calamity that would haunt our nation, impair our credibility and endanger Americans for decades to come."


Same old nonsense. Same old raising of fears to move forward on a failed US ME policy.

Just why would it be a calamity that would haunt our nation? Maybe we would learn not to give a President such sweeping powers again. Maybe the Congress would show a little backbone.

Impair our credibility? Who is more credible: the boss who continues down a disastrous path or the one who admits his mistake and pulls the company back from the brink?


Endanger Americans for decades to come? Is that something new? Americans will always be in danger from terrorists, we are the superpower, it goes with the territory.
