This is going to end poorly for Nifong, that's been obvious for some time now.
I'm not entirely sure Nifong is trying to get a pound of flesh anymore, I think his primary concern is finding a way to extricate himself from this mess.
Dropping all of these false charges so close to his re-election might be seen as a bit too obvious. The strategy may be to do it in stages, to give the appearance they were only dropped as a result of continuing investigation and newly discovered facts.
This whole thing has been outrageous, and a real abuse of power and violation of rights. Prosecutors have a lot of discretion and immunity, but I hope at the end of the day, someone goes after this Nifong character in court.
